Die Digitalisierung und Vernetzung der technischen Medien hat unsere Welt im Innersten verändert und ein wichtiger Aspekt dieser digitalen Revolution betrifft die Art und Weise, wie sich Bilder über den Planeten verbreiten. In unvorstellbarer Menge werden unablässig auf sämtlichen Kanälen Bilder um die Welt gefunkt, ein gigantisches visuelles Rauschen, wie es noch vor wenigen Jahrzehnten nicht vorstellbar gewesen wäre. Verändert haben sich dadurch vor allem unsere Vorstellungen von Autorschaft und Authentizität. Wer der Urheber eines Bildes ist, ist eine Frage, die in den meisten Fällen der viral durchs Netz gejagten Bilder überhaupt nicht mehr zu beantworten ist, ebensowenig wie die Frage, ob das, was auf den ersten Blick aussieht wie ein ganz normales Foto, nicht das Ergebnis erheblicher digitaler Bearbeitung ist und also gar keine Realität abbildet. Der Einzelne ist in diesem vernetzten Bilderstrom nicht viel mehr als ein verschwindend kleiner Knotenpunkt, der nichtsdestotrotz mit seinen Likes und Shares dazu beiträgt, dass die Maschine weiterläuft.

Einer dieser unendlich vielen Knotenpunkte ist der facebook account des Fotografen und Medienkünstlers Bernhard Moosbauer. Das visuelle Material, das ihm hier scheinbar zufällig und ungeordnet zuströmt, nimmt er auf, bearbeitet es weiter und hat auf diese Weise ein Archiv der Gegenwartskultur erstellt, das den Betrachter gleichermaßen zum Lachen, wie zum Nachdenken über das Verhältnis von Medien und Wirklichkeit bringt. Durch Moosbauers Remix-Technik, die durch eine einheitliche, kontrastarme Schwarzweiß-Ästhetik den Bildern alles Grelle zunächst wegnimmt und sie auf eine gemeinsame Ebene bringt, ergeben sich ganz neue Kontexte und Bedeutungsfelder. Und so scheint hinter der vordergründigen Komik der oft absurden Szenen eine Melancholie über den alltäglichen Wahnwitz der Gegenwart auf.

Bernhard Moosbauer (*1969) arbeitet seit 2001 als freischaffender Fotograf, DJ und Medienkünstler. Er ist Mitbegründer von pavlov´s dog. Moosbauer studierte Fotografie und Medienkunst an der Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst bei Timm Rautert und Helmut Mark, wo er 2001 sein Diplom machte. Er lebt und arbeitet in Berlin.

The digitalisation and the constant inter-connection through media have changed our world at its core. One of the most important aspects of this digital revolution has been the way in which images are distributed around the globe. In unimaginably large amounts, images are sent around the world through various, uncountable channels: This constant flow creates gigantic visual noise that, just a few years ago, would have thought to be impossible.
What has also changed is our perception of authorship and authenticity. Who owns the copyright to an image is a question that-for most images that are shot virally through the social and other networks-remains unanswered. In regards to authenticity the question as to whether an image is not always the result of a digital altering process and therefore does not depict „reality“ also remains unanswered.

Insight of this interconnected gush of images the single image becomes nothing more than an extremely slight hub that nevertheless supports this endless image machinery with its likes and shares.

One of the many hubs or image junctions is the facebook account of the photographer and media artist Bernhard Moosbauer. He takes the visual material that randomly flows towards him in the social network and re-works it. In this way he has accumulated an archive of contemporary culture that makes the viewer smile and at the same time makes us think about the relationship between media and reality.
Moosbauer’s remix-technology takes away the garish through a coherent, low-contrast, black and white aesthetic. In this way Moosbauer breaks the images down to a coherent level and suddenly one is able to see the images in a new context and on a different semantic level.
What then appears in these images-behind the obvious humour of this-often absurd-scenery-is a melancholic view of the daily absurdity of contemporary culture.

Bernhard Moosbauer (*1969) lives and works in Berlin as a freelance photographer, DJ and media artist. He is one of the founders of pavlov´s dog. Moosbauer holds a degree in Photography and Media Art from the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig where he was a student of Timm Rautert and Helmut Mark. He received his diploma in 2001.
