Skate Girls of Kabul

Es war Ende 2012, als Jessica Fulford-Dobson in einem kleinen Zeitungsartikel über das Projekt Skateistan erfuhr. Diese afghanische NGO nutzt das Skateboardfahren, um Kindern Bildung näher zu bringen. Jessica war einerseits begeistert von der Geschichte der NGO und gleichzeitig enttäuscht, dass so eine großartige und einmalige Initiative nur die geringe Aufmerksamkeit einer kleinen Zeitungskolumne bekam. Die Möglichkeit junge Mädchen aus einem wunderbaren, wenn auch kriegsgebeutelten Land dabei zu fotografieren, wie sie etwas für ihr Land außergewöhnliches tun, stellte für sie eine einmalige Gelegenheit dar. Außerdem erhoffte sie sich durch ihre Bilder mehr Aufmerksamkeit und Unterstützung für diese ermutigende Geschichte aus Afghanistan zu generieren.

Jessica Fulford-Dobson dokumentiert mit ihren Fotografien die Hilfe und die Freude, die Skateistan den Mädchen vor Ort bringt ohne diese dabei in ihrer Kultur zu beeinflussen, sondern vielmehr versucht die lokale Kultur in das Projekt zu integrieren.

Seit dem Jahr 2000 hat sich Jessica Fulford-Dobson, geboren 1969, als freie Porträtfotografin einen Namen gemacht. So hängen ihre Werke in englischen Privathäusern, wie z.B. bei den Churchills oder Mitgliedern der Königlichen Familie. Aber auch die Öffentlichkeit kann sich an ihren detailstark komponierten Porträtaufnahmen erfreuen: Man findet sie nicht nur im Telegraph Magazine, der britischen Vogue oder anderen Zeitungen und Magazinen rund um den Globus, sondern auch bei Ausstellungen in New York, London und Prag.

Skate Girls of Kabul

In late 2012, Jessica Fulford-Dobson came across a small newspaper article about Skateistan, an Afghan NGO that uses skateboarding to bring education to children. She instantly thought it was a shame that such a unique, visually striking and uplifting story was compressed into a small column of text.

Here was an opportunity to photograph young girls doing something exceptional in a beautiful, albeit war-torn, country. In addition, she hoped to bring more publicity and support to a genuinely positive story from Afghanistan through these photographs.

Jessica has created this series showcasing the help and happiness Skateistan has brought to the girls whilst not influencing their Afghan culture, but working with it.

Since the year 2000 Jessica Fulford-Dobson (*1969) has made a name for herself as a portrait photographer. Her works are part of private homes and that includes those of the family of Churchill or members of the British Royal Family. But Jessica’s work can also be seen in public: Not only does she photograph for newspapers and magazine such as the Telegraph magazine, the British Vogue or other international publications but her work has been exhibited internationally in New York, London or Prague. The exhibition at pavlov’s dog marks the first time that Jessica Fulford-Dobson is showing the portraits of the Skate Girls in Germany.
