Kate Bellm & Edgar Lopez
Nostalgia for Paradise
Zwei Jahre lang reisten die Fotografin Kate Bellm und ihr Partner Edgar Lopez um die ganze Welt, ein ruheloser Trip auf der Suche nach absoluter Freiheit und Schönheit. Auf dieser Reise sammelten sie physische Objekte und Kate Bellm machte Fotos: „Kidnapping moments“, wie sie es nennt. Das künstlerische Ergebnis dieser Reise ist die Ausstellung „Sehnsucht nach dem Paradies“ und liegt weitab von klassischen Reisedokumentationen, gleicht eher einem Drogentrip: phantastisch, surreal und überdreht.
Eine Seite der Ausstellung bildet der von Edgar Lopez aus gefundenen Objekten und übermalten Bildern arrangierte Altar. Die andere Seite zeigt Kate Bellms Fotografien, die oftmals wie direkt aus Träumen entsprungen scheinen. Die komplementären Teile der Ausstellung spielen beide mit dem visuellen Vokabular des Exotischen, Fremden; ein wilder Mix von Zitaten, jenseits jeder folkloristischen Verklärung.
Wenn man weit genug reist, so heißt es, dann begegnet man am Ende sich selbst. Ob an diesem Punkt der Reise dann das Paradies liegt, muss offen bleiben. Das im Unterwegssein erlebte Gefühl ewiger Jugend und völliger Unbeschwertheit wird aber durch die rauschhafte Bilderwelt dieser Ausstellung erneut beschworen.

Kate Bellm (*1987) wuchs in London auf, wo sie schon früh die Fotografie für sich entdeckte. Während sie zunächst damit anfing, Biker und Tattoostudios in einem eher dokumentarischen Stil zu fotografieren, verbinden ihre aktuellen Arbeiten Einflüsse aus Fashion, Skateboarding und ihren zahlreichen Reisen. Bellms Fotografien wurden in Gruppenausstellungen in Paris, Berlin, London, Philadelphia und Zürich gezeigt und erschienen in Esquire, l’Officiel, Vice, The Herald Tribune, Weltwoche Stil, Interview, Sunday Times Style, Wonderland, Desillusion, I Love You und Lurve Magazine.
Edgar Lopez (*1982) geboren in Mexiko, zur Zeit unterwegs auf Reisen. In seinen Arbeiten benutzt er oft Recycling Material und stützt sich stark auf eine DIY-Ethik, wissend dass es kein Vorankommen ohne eine Reflexion des Vergangen gibt.

Nostalgia for Paradise
A restless trip in search for absolute freedom and beauty, photographer Kate Bellm and her partner Edgar Lopez travelled the world for two years. During their travels they collected physical objects and Kate Bellm took pictures; „kidnapping moments“ is what she calls her way of working. The artistic result of this trip is the exhibition „Nostalgia for paradise“ at pavlov’s dog. However, the exhibited images are far from being what one would call a classic travel journal or documentation, it seems to be more like a drug-induced hallucination: fantastical, surreal and with highly charged imagery.
An altar of found objects and images by Edgar Lopez takes up one site of the exhibition space. The other side shows Kate Bellm’s photographs that often seem like they have been extracted directly from a world of dreams and fantasies.
The two parts of the exhibition complement each other and both play with the visual vocabulary of the exotic, the unknown. The resulting installation is a mix of visual references, yet it is far from being any kind of folkloric idealisation of travelling or the paradise.
It is a common believe, that at the end of a long journey one is always confronted with an encounter of one’s own self. It is unclear, however, whether it is at that point of a journey that one finds the paradise. What becomes clear in this ecstatic imagery is the feeling of eternal youth and complete jauntiness one only experiences when travelling.
Andreas Wolf
Kate Bellm, (*1987) grew up in London, where she learned photography in high school, developing her own films in the dark room, via contact sheets and prints. While she began photographing in a documentary style, shooting bikers and tattoo parlors, her work now combines fashion, skateboarding, and her travels for its inspiration. Bellm`s works have been included in several group exhibitions in Paris, Berlin, London, Philadelphia and Zurich, and have been published in Esquire, l’Officiel, Vice, The Herald Tribune, Weltwoche Stil, Interview, Sunday Times Style, Wonderland, Desillusion, I Love You and Lurve Magazine.
Edgar Lopez (*1987) was born in Mexico, currently living on the Road. His work creates an interactive experience while telling a story he focus on the idea of creating something new all together working with recycled materials as canvas. He believes strongly in the DIY ethics and is aware of the necessity of adaptation in order to move forward while simultaneously reflecting on the past.
