Western Promises

Die Ausstellung greift den Mythos des Wilden Westens auf. Unsere Vorstellungen von den USA sind nicht zuletzt durch den amerikanischen Western geprägt. Das Land ist einerseits Sehnsuchtsort, Projektionsfläche mythisch überhöhter Landschaftsvorstellungen, Inbegriff von Freiheit und Weite, andererseits ein Land, dem wir mit ambivalenten Gefühlen begegnen. Wie auch immer die Bewertungen ausfallen, immer sind sie mit visuellen Klischees verwoben. Die Spiegelung solcher Stereotype in und auf das Land Brandenburg eröffnet ein Spiel mit Bilderwartungen. In den Bildzuordnungen werden die Orte zuweilen unsicher, gelegentlich kann man sich fragen, was nun eigentlich Brandenburg ist, was die USA. Es ergeben sich überraschende und manchmal frappierende Analogien.
Merkwürdigerweise sieht es so aus, also ob es sich um dieselbe Landschaft, genauer noch, um ein und denselben Kulturraum handelt.

Rainer Sioda, geboren 1958, lebt und arbeitet in Berlin. Für seine Arbeit „Transatlantic Relations“ erhielt er den Kunstpreis Fotografie Lotto Brandenburg 2015. Sein gleichnamiges Buch ist beim Berliner Verlag PogoBooks erschienen und hatte 2014 bei pavlov‘s dog seine Premiere.

The exhibition draws on the myth of the Wild West. Our picture of the United States is influenced not least by the American Western. The States are, for one part, the subject of longing, the projection of mythically overburdened landscapes, the epitome of freedom and space, and on the other hand a country we regard with a feeling of ambivalence. Whatever your view, it is always interwoven with visual clichés. The reflection of such stereotypes in the German state of Brandenburg inspires a game on visual expectations. Within the images, the locations start to become unclear, one starts to wonder what really is Brandenburg, and what is the USA. The result is often surprising and yields some striking analogies. Oddly enough, it can not only look like the same landscape, but even be of one and the same cultural area.

Rainer Sioda, born in 1958, lives and works in Berlin. He was awarded the Kunstpreis Fotografie Lotto Brandenburg 2015 for „Transatlantic Relations“. His book by the same name was published by PogoBooks Berlin and premiered in 2014 at pavlov’s dog.
