Im Mai 2006 begegneten sich Timm Kölln und Olaf Unverzart zum ersten Mal während des berühmten Radrennens „Giro d’Italia“. Beide schätzten schon vorher die Arbeiten des jeweils anderen und so entwickelte sich schnell eine Freundschaft, geprägt vom künstlerischen Austausch.

Was Kölln und Unverzart verbindet, ist die Leidenschaft für den Radsport mit dessen jährlich aufs Neue durch Land und Landschaft ziehenden Profizirkus. So widmet sich ihre gemeinsame Ausstellung „Das muss man doch sehen“ auch eben diesem Thema. Aufnahmen aus dem Renngeschehen stehen dabei gleichberechtigt neben beiläufigen Beobachtungen abseits der Strecke und Einblicken in die private Welt der Sportler.

Beide Fotografen arbeiten überwiegend in konzeptionellen Bildstrecken, die in dieser Ausstellung mit einer Durchmischung aufgehoben werden. Die für pavlov’s dog gestaltete Rauminstallation vermittelt dem Betrachter auf diese Weise ein Bild vom Facettenreichtum dieses heterogenen Sports, fern von Siegerlisten oder der andauernden Mystifizierung der Tour de France

„Das muss man doch sehen“ ist ein Satz, den sowohl Radfahrer als auch Fans ausrufen, wenn ein Fahrer eben genau etwas übersieht: eine Attacke oder ein Hindernis auf der Strecke, das zu einem Sturz führt. Metaphorisch gewendet ist das die exakte Jobbeschreibung für einen Reportagefotografen: Dinge zu sehen, über die andere hinwegblicken. Und genau das gelingt Kölln und Unverzart in ihrer Arbeit. Muss man gesehen haben!

Timm Kölln (*1976) und Olaf Unverzart (*1972) veröffentlichen regelmäßig im englischen Radsportmagazin Rouleur. Im selben Verlag erschien 2010 Köllns erstes Buch, The Peloton, eine in fünfjähriger Arbeit entstandene Portraitstudie des Profiradsports. Von Olaf Unverzart sind bisher folgende Monographien erschienen: Sans Moi (2005), Leichtes Gepäck (2009) und Don’t fade to Grey (2011).

Unverzart studierte an der Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst in Leipzig künstlerische Fotografie und lebt in München. Kölln ist Autodidakt und wohnt in Berlin.

It was during the famous „Giro d’Italia“ cycling race in May 2006 that Timm Kölln and Olaf Unverzart first met. Prior to this encounter, both had long appreciated each other’s work, and they quickly became friends, prompted by an exchange of photographic ideas and concepts.

Both photographers are brought together by their passion for the sport of cycling and the yearly rigmarole of professional cycling and its repeated travels through countries and landscapes. „You should have seen that coming“ is their first joint exhibition and deals with the subject of road racing. Photographs of the race are hereby juxtaposed with casual observations off the track, as well as insights into the private world of the athletes.

Both photographers mainly work in conceptual photographic series, brought together here in combination for this exhibition. The specific installation for pavlov’s dog attempts to give the viewer an insight into a multi-facetted, heterogeneous sport – beyond any list of winners or the routine mystification of the Tour de France, for example.

„You should have seen that coming“ is a phrase often used by cyclists, as well as their fans, when a cyclist overlooks something – a break or an obstacle on the road, perhaps – that then leads to a fall. Metaphorically speaking, the phrase is also an exact job description of a reportage photographer: to see things that other people overlook or do not notice. And that is exactly what the two photographers achieve in their work.

Timm Kölln and Olaf Unverzart are regular contributors to the British cycling magazine Rouleur. The same publisher also published Kölln’s first book, The Peloton, in 2010, a collection of portraits from the world of professional cycling that was the result of a five-year period of work. Olaf Unverzart has already published numerous monographs: Sans Moi (2005), Spuren (2007), Leichtes Gepäck (2009) and Don’t Fade to Grey (2011).
Unverzart studied Fine Art Photography at the Academy of Visual Arts in Leipzig and lives in Munich. Kölln is a self-taught photographer and lives in Berlin.
