Blood Pressure

Diāna Tamane, Family Portrait, HD video, 2013 – work in progress

Diana Tamane observes her own life and that of the others. The protagonists in her photo and video works are often family members. Her own father, who has been importing cars from the West since the 1990s, her grandmother, who smuggles flowers across the green border or her mother, who became a truck driver after loosing her job. Tamane portrays them rather classically, but also by showing details from their appartments or close ups of their skin.

Twentyone photographs from the inheritance of her greatgrandmother suggest that towards the end of life the physical constitution becomes more relevant than one’s own memories. The photo series „Blood Pressure“ exhibits the blood pressure values of her relative. The longtime study „Familiy Portrait“ shows transcience. Mother, grandmother and greatgrandmother, but also father and uncle in different works – they all are much more than just the artist’s family. They’re representatives of a world, that becomes increasingly global and more complex. How do we adapt to this world, how does this mobile life change us, what do we hold on to, what can we still agree on and where do opinions differ? Tamane herself appears increasingly alien next to the other women of the family, a representative of a new generation in the Baltic states, whom the old borders are no longer valid for.

Diana Tamane, born 1986, in Riga, lives and works in Tartu ( Estonia). She studied arts at Tartu Art College and Sint-Lukas School of Arts in Brussels. In 2015 and 2016 she attended the HISK post-graduate-program in Gent. Most recently her works have been shown at „kim? Contemporary Art Center“ in Riga (Latvia), S.M.A.K. in Ghent (Belgium) and Fotomuseum Winterthur (Switzerland). In 2018 she was awarded the Riga Photography Biennal award „Seeking the Latest in Photography!“ and she recently was a resident at Artport Tel Aviv.
